The Art of Sharing, A Dozen Dresses, Photography of Fred Stein, Edward Steichen and More

Today on the show it’s all about film, and sharing. So we’ll peak into the minds of those talented artists behind the camera lens, and find out what makes them tick. As is so often the case with great artists, there’s a whole lot of fascinating stuff going on in there, and the time, planning and effort that goes into capturing the perfect image, telling a compelling story, and changing the world, one image at a time. Artist, filmmaker Joel Tauber is on a one man mission to shed light on the act of sharing. Why do we share? Why should we share, and why should we care? Joel’s got some ideas for you to kick around. Performance artist, photographer, Diana Greene is here to share the stories behind A Dozen Dresses, and she’s got a few doozies. Filmmaker Peter Stein has made blockbuster horror film classics like Friday the 13th Part 2, but he’s all about the beauty of the simple black and white image as captured by his father, renowned photographer Fred Stein.

Christie’s Reveals Detroit Art Appraisal

The heart of the world-class collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts would raise somewhere between $452 million and $866 million if sold to help the City of Detroit dig its way out of bankruptcy, Christie’s said Wednesday, announcing the results of a highly anticipated appraisal.

Experts from the auction house have scoured a significant portion of the collection for months now at the behest of Detroit’s emergency manager, Kevyn D. Orr, who is pushing the museum to help the city contend with more than $18 billion in debt. Some of Detroit’s largest creditors have contended in court that the museum’s collection is not an essential city asset and should be sold to help pay those who are owed money.

2013 Choreographers' Evening at the Walker Art Center: Fleet feet for big brains

As a snapshot of a community, the Walker Art Center's Choreographers' Evening might be the best annual curated event in Minnesota. It serves a function similar to that of a visual art biennial, and in fact the 2013 incarnation shared a sensibility—for better and for worse—with this fall's Minnesota Biennial at the Soap Factory. Both showcased work that's imaginatively conceived and isn't afraid to have fun, but that's also prone to opacity.
